Are These Efforts Worth It?

My ideology around this key theme is that I can see that KPSP is making the effort to integrate their knowledge and the young and enthusiastic minds of our communities children… but how is this translating?

In other words… Are the children actually buying into this mindset or are they just petting animals?

In Short…

YES!!!

At least Ms. Hodges seems to think so!

Q: Do you feel that the informational events that you guys host are properly being executed? *Meaning are people listening*

A: Yes. Simply yes. The kids, parents, grandparents, we’ve seen changes in all types of people.

Q: How do the youth react to these new ideas of sustainability?

A: As I said they love it! We incorporate gardening and animals and this allows us to grasp their attention.

Q: What are some lessons that you have learned from this work?

A: Well I have learned that children are really a gateway to sustainability. In almost every kid I’ve worked with I see this fire in their eyes that wants to know more and see more when it comes to sustainable living.

How it relates to the 4 pillars of sustainability

Similar to the previous page about child engagement, this page justifies that the kids are actually retaining the information. Without retention the process would be useless.

Will Allen teaches us the importance of passing the torch to the youth.

“I began to teach young people from the projects and the inner city how to grow food. I conveyed the life lessons that agriculture teaches. Through trial and error, my staff and I developed new models for growing food intensively and vertically in cities.” -Will Allen

Allen and KPSP are trying to instill the four pillars of just sustainability into these kids early on in life. These are qualities that will last them a lifetime!!
